CARPET MAKERS

In Britain, carpets are common in many houses and workplaces. Carpet makers are in demand, because no matter what technology or fashions change, people still want warm, comfortable homes. One way of achieving this is with good quality carpet by expert carpet makers.
Carpet makers have a long history. The earliest known carpet actually dates to the fifth century BC, almost 2,500 years ago! This is called the Pazyryk Carpet, a beautiful square carpet which was probably made in Armenia by talented carpet makers may have been used as part of a funeral tradition. The ancient Greek writer Herodotus, who is known as the ‘father of history’ claimed that communities in the Caucasus were noted for being talented carpet makers whose rugs had bright colours and did not fade. However, small fragments of carpets have been found going back to the seventh century BC, which shows that there have likely been carpet makers for even longer in human history.
Most carpets would have been in the form of rugs, rather than fitted carpets like we tend to have in modern houses. The ancient Chinese were one culture who specialised in beautiful rugs which carpet makers could produce for their homes, as were the Persians. As these cultures traded extensively, the beautiful creations of the carpet makers found their way into palaces in other cultures. For example, at some point between the eleventh and sixteenth centuries AD, carpets in the Persian style had become common in India.
You may be surprised to know that carpets began arriving in Western Europe and Britain from the eleventh century onwards, brought back by Crusaders from the Middle East as they returned home. However, these were considered too precious to put on the floor in all but the most decadent rooms, so were hung on walls or placed on tables. As the British Empire emerged in the 17th and 18th centuries, carpets were more easily imported, though still considered very valuable.
Britain also became known for highly skilled carpet makers. Britain had a strong market in wool, which was sold to places like Flanders for weaving, but from the 1500s onwards, a British industry of carpet makers developed who could use the good quality wool to produce rugs and carpet. Many of the designs continued to show the influences of Persia and the Far East.
With the Industrial Revolution, carpet production became faster and the quality more consistent. Carpets became more affordable and were more commonly used on the floors of houses. Today, there are many carpet makers who can produce large quantities of hardworking, good quality carpet.
